What a humdinger of a race this is turning into.

We're still slightly puzzled how yesterday afternoon French trimaran skipper Lionel Lemonchois seemingly turned on the after burners, propelling Gitana 11 into the lead of the hotly contested ORMA 60 class, this morning 34 miles ahead of previous leader and 2002 winner Michel Desjoyeaux on Geant.

For the 60ft tris conditions are now virtually perfect for high speed sailing - 15-20 knots just aft of the beam and this is allowing the skippers to abolsutely fly - Lemonchois having averaged 22.5 knots over the last 24 hours (up until quite recently this would have been very close to the outright solo 24 hour record) while Yvan Bourgnon on Brossard has averaged 26.4 knots over the last four hours, and has risen to third place. We'll be watching the 24 hour runs all the more over the next 24 hours.

Tactically the favoured option seems to be to go south. This should prevent the skippers from having to avoid a N-S orientated front that is at present around 450 miles to their west. The present course of Gitana 11 for example it taking her directly towards the Azores and it is likely Lemonchois will steer her around the windward (eastern) side of most of these islands (in fact he appears to be heading for the relatively wide channel between Terceira and Soa Miguel) or risk falling into the islands' wind shadow which in the present conditions will extend 10s of miles downwind. This tactic will place Lemonchois and the leaders into the favourable northeasterly associationed with the giant low pressure to the southeast (the same one creating havoc for the Velux 5 Oceans fleet) and will allow him to transition through to the equally strong northeasterlies to be found on the southeast side of a giant high pressure system moving in from the west that looks set to establish itself (finally) as the Azores high. Conditions for three days time have this high in a well positioned oblong shape with a conveyor belt of favourable winds almost the length of the Route du Rhum race track.

Among the Open 60s, overnight Roland Jourdain skipper of the red Sill & Veolia has moved into the lead of the IMOCA class, although we don't think his lead is as significant over Jean-Pierre Dick on Virbac-Paprec as the table above suggests. Jourdain has been taking a more northerly track this morning having been one of the last of the IMOCA front runners to gybe on the easterly shift at around 2100GMT yesteday evening. Old sparring partner Jean le Cam on VM Materiaux is for the most part following Jourdain's track while out to the east Dominique Wavre on Temenos did well gybing on the inside of the shift compared to his colleagues.

There seems to be some problems with the polling on Brian Thompson's Artemis, who last showed up at around 2300GMT last night at which time we think he was holding third place.

Like the ORMA tris ahead of them the Open 60s are basking in the conditions having averaged 5-16.5 knots over the last four hours.

Over the next few days their tactical options ahead would seem to be more limited than the ORMA tris, with the winds favourable, shifting slightly and up and down marginally in strength extending ahead of the duration of the current forecast boast. They are currently close to the great circle route and there would seem to be little reason in the next 48 hours to deviate much from this.

In the class 40s Figaro veterans Dominique Vittet and Gildas Morvan continue to juggle the lead, Vittet to the north while this morning Morvan to the south has extended, avering 0.8 knot faster than Vittet over the last four hours in the 20-25 knot ENEly winds the boats are currently enjoying.

In the Battle of Britain, the results table has Phil Sharp up to third, although we reckon Ian Munslow on Bolands Mill has the upper hand. Both Sharp and Nick Bubb have put a hitch in to the north overnight, Bubb having gybed back to the southwest just before the latest position update. Why have they done this? The pressure doesn't appear to be better here and they will have to sail further - perhaps placing them closer to the centre of the high pressure system to their north they wil be able to sail a hotter angle - we shall find out if this tactic has worked in due course. Meanwhile Munslow is continuing down a much more southerly track, in the wake of Morvan, his last four hourly average a knot slower than Sharp's.
