For the Class 40s the end of the Route du Rhum is turning into a driftathon. Over the last 24 hours class leader Phil Sharp has covered just 92.5 miles while for second placed Gildas Morvan on Oyster Funds the situation has been even worse, the burly Frenchman covering just 73.7 miles. The night has been a warm but slow one, the 2000 GMT position update showing the two boats having averaged 1.9 and 2.7 knots for the previous four hours.

Fortunately this morning (although it is still dark out on the water where they are) the wind has filled in and the two boats are at least moving again, Morvan making the best of 5-10 knot easterlies, while Sharp some 161 miles WSW of him has slightly stronger ESEerly winds. Fortunately with 240 miles left to sail and Sharp approaching Guadeloupe almost from due north, the British former Mini sailor is slowly sailing into more breeze and with the wind on the beam as he closes on Guadeloupe this hopefully will no make him suffer too much without his genniker.

Yesterday Sharp reported; "Lovely weather, I ‘ve had some wind which was not forecasted, so it's a bonus. Looking forward to things ahead. It wasn't too bad for me, I had some winds - apart from about 2/3 hours with very light winds this morning. It wasn't too shifty so I think I sailed more miles than Morvan cause I had a better winds.I slept quite a bit, but the phone keeps going now and people keep ringing me up saying “ come on – come on you got to go, 300 miles ! It's difficult to catch your sleep sometimes. It should be able to be there in Thursday based on the ETA, hopefully Thursday morning. I'll be reliefed by thinking there's only a few hours before the finish, assuming that I am winning, but I've got to keep sailing hard, because with shifty weather then anything can happen. Everyone speculates that I ‘ve won yet but I haven't crossed the finish line. The finish is going to be amazing anyway, crossing the line in this position, I think it is going to be quite emotional."

As the leaders suffer so this has allowed the chasing pack to close still enjoying stronger winds to the north. In particular Ian Munslow on Bollands Mill is now 300 miles from Sharp, compared to 382 miles this time yesterday. However Munslow has made only small gains over the last 24 hour over this rivals, Olivier Rabine on IXSEA overtaken by Damien Grimont, after experiencing some autopilot problems on board his Class 40.
