Northern 1,000 miler

Announcing a doublehanded race between Holland, Norway and the Shetlands

With a course running from the Netherlands to Norway to Shetland and back to Norway, the 1000-Mile Doublehanded is perhaps the most challenging race held in the northernmost North Sea. This rugged competition combines long-distant sailing with serious competitive racing. 'If you love a good challenge - and want a great excuse for a wild vacation - register now,' say the organisers.

The 1000-Mile Doublehanded consists of three legs between Ijmuiden (Holland), Bergen (Norway) and Lerwick (the Shetland Islands) before finishing back in Bergen.

Leg 1 - IJmuiden - Bergen (600 miles - 10 June 2007)
Leg 2 - Bergen - Lerwick (200 miles - 20 June 2007)
Leg 3 - Lerwick - Bergen (200 miles - 25 June 2007)

The two shorter legs are also part of the Shetland-Bergen Races 2007, so prizes will be awarded in both Lerwick and Bergen. The winner of the 1000-Mile Doublehanded will be announced at the awards ceremony in autumn 2007.

Who can participate?
All experienced sailors seeking serious short-handed sailing competition. Boats must be 27 ft LOA or more, and will be sailed by two people. At least one crewmember must complete the entire race. The only exception is the Open 650 Mini class, which will be created if sufficient entries are received. To qualify, a 175-mile non-stop cruise in open sea must be made

The organisers say 'We're not just in this to tackle the elements - we want to enjoy the company of our fellow sailors. So we designed the 1000-Mile Doublehanded with fleet restarts at the beginning of each leg, so all competitors, be they fast or not-so-fast, stay together and enjoy the fun at every stopover.'
