3 sets new 30 record

Seacart establishes new class time for round Gotland course

Tuesday December 12th 2006, Author: Calle Hennix, Location: Scandinavia
The Round Gotland Midwinter Challenge has a new 30 foot multihull record. The new time of 27 hrs 58 min 42 secs beats the old one by eight hours. When the crew, skipper Isabelle Mungsgaard, Calle Hennix, Anders Lewander and Rickard Oberpichler, on their SeaCart 30 3 started at 2300 Saturday the weather forecast looked good with westerly winds, but in reality it was from the southwest with up to 4.5m waves after two weeks of southerly winds so they were upwind all the way to Visby (first 100nm). On Sunday morning the wind finally shifted to the west and it was good times for the crew - sunny, but cold, sailing from Visby to Cape Hoburgen at an average speed of 16 knots, bringing the record within reach again after a slow start.

At 1400 on Sunday they rounded Cape Hoburgen, Gotland´s most southern point, and the wind dropped from 12–16 knots to 4–6 knots. In a gybe one of the crew, Calle Hennix, hit his head and had to be patched up a bit. At the same time the crew had to make some strategic decisions, negotiating numerous shallows but saving distance to the finish - they had their hands full. The wind increased during the afternoon and on Sunday evening the waves got higher again. The last 50nm from Gotska Sandon to Sandhamn was like sitting in a roller coaster, cold water from everywhere and the speed hitting the 20 knots range most of the time.

At 0300 Monday 3 arrived back in Sandhamn with a cold, tired but very happy crew!
