Day for the students

Capsport-HEC-Ecole Navale take Tour Voile's Dieppe inshore race

Tuesday July 4th 2006, Author: Flavie Caulier, Location: France
We have been waiting for it for the last 48 hours. The wind finally blew for a few hours off the coast of Normandy and the competitors of the Tour de France à la Voile managed to sail one race out of the two initially planned. It's better than nothing and at least, it's changing the overall results.

After his second place at the finish today, Ile de France has taken the overall first place to Perpignan-Mediterranee. "I think we have a lucky star because the conditions are a bit tricky since the start of this TFV," said the skipper Jean-Pierre Nicol. "Today we had a tough start because we went inshore, but we had a feeling it could pay off, so we kept going. Our goal was to have the red spinnaker at least once during this TFV. That's one thing done. As for later - let's wait and see. But truly, the crew is more confident probably more mature."

Yet the game is still very open. Student crews and amateur crews have their word to say against the professionnals today. Like Capsport-HEC-Ecole Navale who won today's race through skills in their manoeuvres. "We were a bit lucky at the start, because we managed to climb from 10th to the leading pack", said Bruno Barbarin, skipper and helmsman onboard. "And in the end, we hoisted the spinnaker a bit faster than them and we overtook them."

Tomorrow, the Mumm 30s will be leaving Dieppe at 8.00am to head to Le Havre, 56 miles further down on the Normandy coast.
