Following the sad retirement of Servane Escoffier and Christophe Lebas due to yet another forestay breakage, so the 24 double handed Figaros are now fanned out across the ocean. There is now a 350 mile divded between Marc Thiercelin and Oliver Krauss on Siemens who are taking a flier to the south and fellow Vendee Globe veteran Bertrand de Broc who is furthest north sailing with Benoit Petit on Les Mousquetaires.

Still in the lead in terms of distance to finish remains Gildas Morvan and Erwan Tabarly on board Cercle Vert who at the latest position report hold a five mile lead over secod placed Corentin Douguet and Thierry Chabagny on E. Leclerc/Bouygues Telecom. Both boats it should be noted are among the most northern, closest to the great circle. However in terms of long term strategy we feel the south is looking favoured where at present Aquarelle sailed by Yannick Bestaven and Ronan Guerin and 2004 winners Armel le Cleac'h and Nicolas Troussel on Brit Air rule the roost with Sam Davies and Alexia Barrier 35 miles astern.

The last 24 hours has seen some new faces coming into the top ten most notably Jeanne Gregoire and Gerald Veniard on Banque Populaire, now up to third.

The forecast charts shows the Azores high gradually lobing out to the southwest over the course of the next few days with the wind veering south and eventually going light first for the boat to the north three days from now as the boats to the south continue in typical 20 knot trade wind conditions.

"They have more pressure in the south and two knots more wind", explains Gildas Morvan. "In north, they have a slightly better wind angle, but clearly not sufficient. In any case that's not what we want," adds Corentin Douguet.
