BMW Group Ireland will again be the title sponsor for the Round Ireland Yacht Race that starts from Wicklow Sailing Club on Saturday 1st July 2006. The 704-mile race attracted 49 entries in 2004 and it is hoped this number will improve further next summer.

The new date is intended to allow an opportunity for boats to enter this prestigious event and also race in Cork Week later in July as it is hoped that visiting crews will come to Ireland for an extended period to sail in both events.

The race leaves Wicklow and sails southwards 'leaving Ireland and her islands to starboard' in a competition famed for its variety of testing conditions and obstacles. Competing the course is considered an achievement in itself and while the top boats will compete for the overall victory on IRC handicap, several are expected to challenge for line honours and the course record of three days four hours and 23 minutes.

Notice of Race (NOR) and Entry Forms are available from the Wicklow Sailing Club, Please contact Denis Noonan at +353 1 2819459.

"Wicklow Sailing Club are delighted to have BMW on board for the 2006 Round Ireland and look forward to an exciting and challenging Race on July 1st,’” said John Johnson, Commodore of the Wicklow Sailing Club.

Conrad Schmidt, Managing Director, BMW Group Ireland, was also delighted: "BMW Ireland are delighted to continue our sponsorship of the BMW Round Ireland Yacht Race, this is one of the most challenging and renowned International events of its kind, we look forward to another fantastic event.”
