France one-two

At conclusion of this year's Archipelago Raid

Sunday August 21st 2005, Author: Kajsa Thelander, Location: Scandinavia
It was close competition to the very end when the competitors in Archipelago Raid finally finished, exhausted, in Sandhamn today. Once again first to cross the finishing line was Outils Océan sailed by the impressive, victorious Thibault Vauchel and Jeremie Lagarigue, eight minutes before the second team French Yamaha Yamarin, sailed by Eric Proust and Yann Andrillon.

Outils Océan have been first checkpoint after checkpoint, with just a few exceptions.
Today, Icom sailed by Finns Patrick Blom and Kasimir Johansson managed to pass Outils Océan when the wind dropped on the run home by paddling, just before the checkpoint in Fejan. They were also ahead at the next checkpoint at Rödlöga. but by Stora Nassa Outils Océan had managed to get back in the lead again, a position they have done exceedingly well to maintain for most of the race.

Thibault Vauchel and Jeremie Lagarigue crossed the finishing line today at 17.00 as first boat, and became the overall winner of The Archipelago Raid 2005. Today's finishing order paralleled the overall results with Yamaha Yamarin sailed by Eric Proust and Yann Andrillon second and Blom and Kasimir a close third.

It has been a hard competition between the four top teams, who have changed their position constantly. But the French were hard to beat in this years Archipelago Raid.

Over the last six days, the competitors have sailed their 5.5m long catamarans, 600 nautical miles from Stockholm and through the archipelago between Sweden and FInland, over the Sea of Åland and back again, passing through 35 checkpoints. The Archipelago Raid is just as much an expedition as it is a challenging race. The finish in Sandhamn today was a victory for all who participated, and it was an exhausted but happy group of sailors who finished today.
