Another shake-up

Since the start of the Tour de France à la Voile in Dunkerque 12 days ago, the Mumm 30 fleet always finished closely grouped. But today on the offshore leg between Paimpol and Douarnenez, almost two hours are separating the winner
Bouygues Telecom from the last boat. Despite a 10th place,
Toulon Provence Mediterranee Coychyères is still leading the overall results.
Pierre-Loïc Berthet and his Bouygues Telecom crew crossed the finish line in Douarnenez (western Brittany), at 14.31 GMT today, 16 minutes ahead of second placed CSC ESSEC. It had taken the winners 18 hours and 38 minutes to sail the 127 mile course around the western tip of Brittany, at an average speed of 6,8 knots. Despite an ENE breeze and a big part of the race sailed under spinnaker, the Mumm 30s had to face strong currents and light wind patches.
With these weather conditions, it was important for all the 30 teams to play every wind shifts correctly, as well as be quite lucky. “At the poll near l’Aber Wrac’h (north Finistère), we were second," said veteran singlehanded Figaro sailor Gildas Morvan, tactician on board Alpes-Maritimes Mandelieu Theoule for this leg. Then we fell in a windless patch and CSC ESSEC overtook us”.
“We thought Alpes Maritime had some seaweed around their keel," recounted Hervé Gautier, skipper on board CSC ESSEC. "We managed to stay second until the finish. We are very happy with our speed”.
