B&G, the Performance Sailing Division of Simrad will preview its next generation WTP (Wave Technology Processor) at Genoa Boat Show 2005. B&G say the WTP2 improves performance by accurately calculating and correcting for the effects of boat motion from the measurements of the wind at the masthead and in addition, it displays all data in 'real time' with display outputs of up to 10Hz.

Other enhancements include the implementation of Windows CE architecture which will increase customisation possibilities for advanced users.

The exisiting WTP is currently being used extensively by the America's Cup, Volvo Ocean Race, Transpac 52s, and ORMA 60 Trimaran fleets in addition to numerous other performance race boats.

“WTP2 enhances our already highly competitive h2000 instruments and is ideal for serious teams and customers requiring bespoke solutions for high performance boats,” says David Minors, Technical Director at B&G. “The upshot of the updated hardware and software in WTP2 is that navigators and tacticians can be even more confident that they are maximising the performance of a boat with the most accurate data in all conditions.”

The WTP uses rate gyros to measure 3D boat motion, and says B&G, eliminates inaccuracies from the measured wind readings, resulting in the most accurate wind data available. Variables such as Apparent Wind Speed and Angle are back-calculated making wind numbers consistent during manoeuvres.

WTP2 is controlled via B&G's advanced Deckman tactical software, which enables full control of navigation, calibration and configuration. Deckman is written in a high level language that is straightforward to customise, making it ideal for bespoke yachts and competitive teams – those customers catered for by B&G's Custom Projects team.
