Minis set off again

Pornichet Select 650

After his second place in the Odyssee D’Ulysse this year, British Mini sailor Phil Sharp begins his second race of the season on Sunday, the Pornichet Select 650: a 300 mile singlehanded race around the Biscay islands. Again as the only Brit in this race, Phil represents Britain in a race that is completely dominated in numbers by the French. A massive fleet of 70 boats will take part in this race and the competition is high at the front. Bruno Peyron should be returning from the record-breaking Orange II for this race, to race in a Pogo 2 towards what is most likely a 2007 Transat campaign to celebrate the 30 year anniversary of the Transat.

The course takes the fleet from Pornichet, up around Belle Isle, then down past Isle d’Yeu to a mark of Bourgenay, before returning all the way back up to round Isle de Griox, and then heading back to Pornichet.



Phil comments on the race ahead: “It is basically the around-the-rocks race of the season. There are therefore a lot of land effects playing into the weather, and also the course is very tidal, so things should be very tactical and interesting. There will be no time to sleep until the finish! Four other boats of the same quick Magnen design as GBR 419 are racing, including Vecteur Plus and Karen Liquid, which both have high performance carbon rigs, unlike the standard alloy rig on 419. They will probably have the edge upwind in some conditions and also they will be quick in light airs since the boats are now much lighter, the bulb weight having been reduced to compensate for the reduced weight aloft. It will be interesting to see how 419 compares, I hope the other Magnens will not disappear over the horizon, since the race is forecast to be very light!”
