Multihulls to Bermuda

A report from the second start of the Marion-Bermuda race

Sunday June 19th 2005, Author: Talbot Wilson, Location: United States
Seven multihulls crossed the line Saturday morning in the first multihull start in Marion to Bermuda history. Contrary to Friday’s windy start for monohull yachts, the seven starters on Saturday had a light northeasterly breeze and skimmed away from the line in Buzzards Bay under spinnakers.

The course down the bay was almost dead downwind and the boats split gybes with most of the fleet taking the right hand side of the bay. The light winds will mean slow going. With their start a day later than the monohulls organisers hope all the leaders will arrive in Bermuda together.

The largest boat in class M is the Open 60 trimaran Hartsease Laurus Roc, there are two Hammerhead 54s Rogue Wave and Flying Fish. There is a Newick Traveler, Alacrity, and a Newick Tricia named Alegra and an Explorer 44 Falcor - all of them trimarans. The only cat is an Atlantic 46 named Great White.
