Global Challenge crews announced

The wait is finally over for the 200 crews taking part in this year's round the world race

After more than three years of hard work and anticipation more than 200 Crew Volunteers gathered together on Saturday to learn who they will be racing around the world with in the Global Challenge 2004/05.

At 18.00, in the very Waterfront Rooms at the Schroders London Boat Show, ExCeL, the waiting was finally over as Sir Chay Blyth, executive chairman of race organiser, Challenge Business revealed the 12 teams. In July 2005 one of these will be standing on the podium as race winners.

There were shouts of delight, rapture, a great deal of hugging and even some bewildered confusion as the team met one another and introduced themselves as comrades for the very first time.

Sir Chay Blyth told the crew: “The Global Challenge is a life changing experience. There are lots of opportunities, so recognise them and take advantage!”

Richard Laughlin, who will sail with Amedeo commented: “I’m really looking forward to now working as a team.” Laura Alexander, who will be sailing on Dave Melville’s yacht explained how she felt: “totally overwhelmed,” and Mike Morgan who is on Clive Cosby’s team said that he was: “glad to know what team we are on so we can start working on the campaign.”

Now the hard work of building the team, developing winning strategies and sailing the yacht as a race crew begins.

The first hurdle for the 12 race skippers, however, was actually getting their Crew Volunteers together, keeping them together, navigating their way out of ExCeL and finding somewhere to start their team bonding session!
