Passing south of Tasmania today Geronimo scores a high daily run

Thursday March 25th 2004, Author: James Boyd, Location: Transoceanic
Day 28
Position: 52°33S 136°14E
24 hour run: 555.22 miles
Av speed: 23.13 knots

Geronimo is now fully up to speed again after her past two relatively slow days. Now back into a strong westerly airstream she has knocked off a useful 555 miles in the 24 hours. This has pulled her back to within around 471 miles of Cheyenne's equivalent end of day 28 position.

Today as Geronimo passes to the south of Tasmania the forecast indicates that she will fall off the back of the Southern Ocean depression she is currently riding and will go through a short transistion period before feeling the effects of the next. This should take place this evening when they will experience a massive wind shift from the southwest to the north. The crew will have to watch out as this second depression looks set to track further north and it is likely that today we will see Geronimo putting some more north into her course to avoid falling foul of unfavourable wind conditions.
