Crossing the equator

Jonathan McKee show the way to Brazil in leg two of the Mini Transat

Jonathan McKee continues to extend in the Mini Transat and this morning was some 72 miles ahead of his French rivals as the boats look set to cross the equator today.

Tactically McKee on his Team McLube is looking to be in great shape - not only does he have a substantial lead, but he is also to the southeast of his rivals. At present the boats are sailing into south southeasterly winds of around 15 knots but for McKee not only is the wind marginally backed on his side of the course, but being further east he has a slightly free angle to pass Recife, still some 600 miles away.

The front four boats are now getting on for 100 miles ahead of the chasing pack with Irishman Cian McCarthy now up into eighth place. He is neck and neck with the leading series boat, David Raison on Rayon Liquide. Following our interview with him, Ian Munslow is of course down to 24th overall.
