Finish time up in the air for Stamm

We look at what happening weatherwise for the end of Around Alone

Sunday April 27th 2003, Author: James Boyd, Location: Transoceanic
It will be a lively race of racing for the leaders in Around Alone with strong southerlies speeding them towards the Newport, RI finish line.

At 0600 this morning clear race leader Bernard Stamm on board Bobst Group-Armor Lux still have more than 800 miles to run, but looked set to put in a good day's run. However for all the boats it will be a case of getting what they can in the bank, because centred to the south of New York is moving rapidly northwest and by this evening will be centred to the south of Nova Scotia. The low pressure system will be replaced by a large high pressure system moving eastwards across the Appalachian mountains that by Monday morning looks set to be providing Bernard Stamm and the leaders with equally strong headwinds.

Typically - this being the end of a round the world race after all - the high pressure system will move across the race course and will be the final hurdle for competitors until the end of the week.

Meanwhile those to the east than the likes of Tommy Hilfiger Freedom America and Ocean Planet look set to have a day of light flukey conditions on Monday but will be better to get the favourable wind shift first when it arrives mid-week than those like Emma Richards to the east. However the former boats should be in better shape to make use of the northeasterly flowing Gulf Stream (see image at the bottom of this page).
