Victory for the old timers

Leg one of the Figaro class' two handed Trophee BPE to Madeira concludes

Monday September 29th 2003, Author: James Boyd, Location: Transoceanic
In the early hours of this morning the first boat to arrive into Madeira on leg one of the Trophe BPE, the Figaro class' two handed race ultimately finishing in Dakar was Myrialis of highly experienced offshore races Dominic Vittet and Bertrand de Broc. Vittet has been around the multihull and Open 60 circuit forever, while de Broc is a two time Vendee Globe competitor (the guy who had to sew his tongue back on...) and also famously retired from last November's Route du Rhum freaked out after a near collision with an upturned trimaran during the first night at sea.

After seven and a half days at sea, the duo crossed the line in Oporto Santo, with much esctatic air punching and whooping. During the leg they experienced big conditions, surfing at 20 knots in 35 knots winds off Gibraltar. But their winning move was to have the courage to take the offshore route sailing down the coast of Portugal which ultimate paid.

Vittet and de Broc were followed in less than one hour and a half later by Figaro veteran Gildas Morvan and former Team New Zealander Bertrand Pace and a steady stream have been arriving since.
