Thursday October 9th 2003, Author: James Boyd, Location: United Kingdom
10:30 From Lizard Point photographer Thierry Martinez reports that he can see Mari Cha IV some eight miles away from the finish line. Their arrival has been delayed slightly because they are having to gybe downwind. It looks like they are going to pass close to the peninsula.
10:50 Mari Cha is about five miles away. She's got the full laundry up - main, mizzen, mizzen staysail, jib and code 7. She's currently on port gybe heading in towards the Lizard sailing in 12-15 knots of southwesterly breeze. The tide is currently foul at the Lizard, but this should present little problem for the 140ft schooner. The sky is overcast, around four TV crews are out there or up in the air in helicopters, plus there are a lot of reporters and photographer - and thedailysail.com.
The assembled gathering awaiting the arrivals includes HRH King Constantine of Greece, whose son Crown Prince Pavlos is a grinder on board. HRH Prince Pavlos is married to Princess Marie-Chantal, the second daughter of Mari Cha IV's owner Robert Miller. Robert Miller's other daughters are also present - his eldest, Pia Getty and youngest Princess Alexandra von Furstenberg.
Mari Cha IV crosses the line at 11:32:20 BST.
Her time for the Atlantic crossing is 6 days 17 hours 52 minutes and 39 seconds at an average speed of 18.2 knots. This smashes Bernard Stamm's record of 8 days 20hours 55 minutes and 35 seconds by a phenomenal 2 days, 3 hours 2 minutes and 56 seconds.
