Morty acquires Carkeek 40 Mk2
The first Fast 40 Class owners meeting was held earlier this week, chaired by Class President Rob Greenhalgh.
First mooted in November 2013, the high performance class of planing race boats, has taken a while to become reality but at Monday's meeting 11 owners confirmed their participation in the inaugural Fast 40 circuit, to take place in 2016.
The latest recruit to the class is Peter (Morty) Morton, who has since announced that he will be campaigning with a new Carkeek 40 Mk II, Girls on Film, built by Premier Composite Technologies in Dubai, ready to be launched for winter training in Dubai.
"The Fast 40 idea that Rob Greenhalgh came up with last year really got me interested in bigger boats again. I'm not a one design fan as personalising and tweeking boats is part of the fun I get out of the sport,” comments Morty. “The Fast 40 Class allows this and a 40 ft is a perfect boat for the Solent which in my view is the most testing place in the world to race.
“My association with the Waimer Brothers goes back over a decade and the Premier Composite facility they have produces fantastic quality carbon race boats. I looked at the alternatives available but the finish and detailing on the C 40 Rebellion was second to none. That combined with the track record of Shaun Carkeek's previous designs made my mind to have a C 40 MkII. I have a strong crew lined up, made up of people I have sailed with over the years and we are really looking forward to racing the boat in March 2016. Looking at the list of boats and owners it will be great fun"
Commenting on Morton’s decision, Hannes Waimer, PCT’s Managing Director commented: “We are delighted, Morty has decided to join this programme, putting his trust in PCT, for his next high performance racing programme.
“Over the years, we have worked with Morty on many successful campaigns, including the dk46s, which we also had the pleasure of building. Morty is a seasoned and successful sailor and we wish Girls on Film every success with this campaign and look forward to seeing them on the water next season.”
