Two bullets for Robertissima
Today all classes at the 33rd Copa del Rey MAPFRE completed two windward-leeward races. The wind filled in late in the central race course on the Bay of Palma, where the Gaastra IRC 0, Barclays 52 Super Series and Gazprom Swan 60 classes were sailing, and as a result had to wait about an hour until wind conditions were favourable for a fair race.
Undeniable star of the day in the Gaastra IRC 0 class was Roberto Tomasini’s J-V72 Mini Maxi Robertissima III, docked out this morning in the last position but won both races today. Robertissima III is now up to second place, three points behind the leader Georges Sakellaris’ Shockwave (2-2) with Andres Soriano’s Alegre third (4-3).
Paul Cayard, sailing on Robertissima reported: "After yesterday's disappointing performance, we came out focused and determined. The wind was lighter and the race course trickier today. In the first race the left side paid and in the second race the right side paid. In both races Bella Mente looked good early and in both races they made mistakes that we took advantage of. We led at every mark of both races. There is still a lot of racing left to do so we need to keep our focus."
Italian Giuseppe Parodi’s TP52 Hurakan had the best results of the day in the Gaastra IRC 1 class, with a first and a second place and maintain their lead, extending over the rest of the fleet. Team Vision Future won the second race, snatching the provisional second place overall from @robas (4-5 today), now third.
Last year’s champion in the class BMW ORC 1, Rats On Fire skippered by Manuel Doreste, maintain its lead from yesterday after an irregular day: winning the first race but finishing seventh in the next, which was won by Natalia Brailoiu’s Natalia. The Romanian boat is ninth overall thanks to a DSQ suffered yesterday, but Natalia will be able to discard this once eight races are sailed. The Leask family's Magical Mystery Tour (3-3) is now up to second place, with the German yacht Earlybird up to third.
Enrique Terol’s Movistar also managed to defend its lead in the class BMW ORC 2. The boat skippered by Pedro Campos achieved his third consecutive victory on the first race of the day, but he was OCS in the next, but the crew made a titanic effort to finish fourth. This second race ended with a tie between Teo Matheu’s Airlan Aermec and Lluis Blanchar’s Varador 2000, who finished with identical times after the time compensation was applied, getting 1.5 points each. Both are behind Movistar overall after four races.
Javier Sanz’s Red Eléctrica de España was star of the day in the Nespresso X-35 class. The boat from the RCNP, left the club this morning in seventh overall, but returned the leader after finishing first and second today. Teemu Kekkonen’s Audi e-tron from Finland won the second race of the day. The Italian yacht Legalain still holds second place, after finishing second and a seventh today, followed now by yesterday’s leader, Puerto Deportivo Benalmádena (6-4). The top four in the overall classifications are all within two points.
In the Herbalife J/80 class, Javier Padrón’s Herbalife defended his lead with a great day in which he posted a third and a second place. The first race of the day went to Pichu Torcida’s Noticia. The two contenders for the title, Factor Energía and Movistar were black flagged, picking up 17 points each, but Movistar responded by winning the following race. The provisional podium after four races Herbalife, Noticia and the defending champion, Hugo Rocha’s New Territories.
