25th anniversary of Dennis Conner's Fremantle victory
After twice successfully defending the America's Cup, Dennis Conner suffered the humiliation in 1983 of becoming the first American in the 132 year history of the Cup to be beaten. Conner's defeat by Australia II made him even more determined to win the Cup back for America. Four years later in Australia he returned in his new boat Stars & Stripes, and along with his all-American team of sailors, took a resounding 4-0 win to bring the America's Cup back to the United States.
The victory made Conner a true legend in the sport, and the 'America's Cup 1987, 25th Anniversary' video looks back at this historic moment, along with a look ahead to the the 34th America's Cup, to be defended by Oracle Racing, in San Francisco next year.
‘Stars & Stripes 25th Anniversary America’s Cup Special’, featuring new interview footage with Dennis Conner, Tom Whidden, Jon Wright and Malin Burnham which will be aired on ESPN Classic this Saturday, February 4th at 2am, 12pm & 7pm EST.
