Block Island - day 1
Tuesday June 24th 2003, Author: Keith Taylor, Location: United States
The impressive fleet of 203 boats gathered for the 20th edition of Storm Trysail's Block Island Race Week got off to a smooth start today in a gentle ten knot westerly breeze.
Although the wind died for some competitors as they were finishing their race and some had to sail a shortened course, the fact that the first race was completed made for a jovial mood at the week-long race series.
Divided into 19 classes, sailing on four separate race courses, the racers fought hard to wrap up the first day in the fickle conditions. Only one class, the J/44s failed to finish.
The presenting sponsor for Block Island Race Week XX is Rolex Watch U.S.A. which will present Submariner timepieces to the skippers of the outstanding boats in the three biggest fleets. The three skippers will be those whose boats have displayed the outstanding performance in their fleet in the judgment of the race committee.
