OYS have recently completed the re-rig of the Swan 80
Maligaya, implementing a complete change out from standing rod rigging to a lightweight PBO rigging system offering improved performance and weight savings without major modifications to the mast.
Built in 2001 the Swan 80 Maligaya is a performance cruiser racer competing extensively on the open circuits, racing under IRC in regattas such the King’s Cup and Maxi Worlds. Fitted with a Hall Spars Carbon mast and Nitronic 50 standing rod rigging, the owner was seeking to improve overall performance and handling of the yacht. Earlier in the season OYS implemented a complete change from standing rod rigging to lighterweight PBO.
OYS’s innovative interchangeable design meant that no modifications needed to be made to the yacht’s equipment; in particular the chainplates, mast tangs and spreader ends were seamlessly interfaced. “The whole project has been a very time critical challenge from beginning to end, with lots of technical issues to overcome to prevent making any alterations to the yacht’s existing equipment.” said Mike Orange, Technical Director for OYS
Maligaya has seen 375kgs shaved off the weight of her standing rig. With an original standing rigging weight of 525kgs, the changeover to PBO saw the new rigging weight drop to a 150kg. Racing benefits were seen at Cork Week Regatta 2006 where Maligaya finished fourth in IRC Super 0.
Because of OYS’s interchangeable design Maligaya has been able to keep its original rod rigging, which can be put back onto the yacht at a future date if the owner or a new owner wishes. Dressing and stepping of the mast was carried out by OYS’s UK agent, HYS Rigging, Hamble, UK.
