Light zephyr wafts Alfa Romeo to first
Saturday May 10th 2003, Author: James Boyd, Location: Italy
A light wind, very nearly dead calm for the first day of the Ermenegildo Zegna Trophy in Portofino.
After waiting a long time for better weather, the Committee decided to get the regatta underway at about 3.30 p.m. and then opted to shorten the course.
First past the post was Alfa Romeo, Neville Crichton’s 27-metre Sydney-Hobart winner, ahead of Idea of Raffaele Raiola from Naples with his brilliant crew including the outstanding Lorenzo Bressani and Tommaso Chieffi, and Domenico Cilenti’s Magic Jena with Mitja Kosmina from Slovenia at the helm.
The yachts came in one after the other very slowly until early evening which delayed the compilation of the adjusted time placings. Tomorrow heralds the second day of regattas, and more light winds are forecast.
