Sunsail, the yacht charter and watersports beach club holidays company, is joining forces with Orsan Yacht Club in Dubrovnik, Croatia, to launch Dubrovnik Race Week, a new international regatta, which will take place for the first time on 3-9 October 2004.
Racing will take place in the waters off Dubrovnik and involve both round the cans Olympic courses as well as some longer passage races to some of the off-lying islands, which make the area such an attractive sailing destination.
Orsan Yacht Club in Dubrovnik has extensive experience in organising international regattas and courses will be set for racing classes as well as cruising classes. The whole ethos of the regatta is one of fun, friendliness and competitive rivalry. It is hoped that entries will come not only from boats based in Croatia, but also those in Italy, Montenegro and Greece.
The Dubrovnik Race Week will be based from the ACI Marina just to the north of the old city of Dubrovnik which has excellent mooring and shoreside facilities. As well as the action on the water, there will be many events ashore for competitors and crews including bands, dancing, local cultural events and extensive food and refreshment possibilities.
Sunsail is just one of the companies sponsoring the event and will be providing the overall prize for the week as well as one of the daily prizes. Sponsorship opportunities are available for various events during the week and it is hoped that the regatta will grow year on year and become a regular feature in the yachting calendar alongside such events as Antigua Sailing Week, the BVI Spring Regatta and the Heineken Regatta in St Martin.
Sunsail boats will be able to be chartered for Dubrovnik Race Week from as little as £465 per person including flights and transfers, plus a 10% racing supplement. There are also scheduled flights into Dubrovnik airport from most major European cities including London, for those wishing to come and join in the regatta and the festivities.
Commenting on the announcement of Dubrovnik Race Week, Rene Sitton, Sunsail’s European Yacht Operations Manager, said: “We have worked very hard over the past few months with “Orsan” Yacht Club in Dubrovnik and are confident we have put together what promises to be a fun regatta in the same style as some of the many Caribbean events.
“With both serious racers and cruising classes taking part, we hope to attract a wide range of yachts and to grow the regatta year on year. Judging by the initial reaction, I feel we are off to a great start.”
