Wallys, Swan 45s and IMS division line up for top level glamour sailing in Portfino

It is one of the key dates in the Mediterranean yacht racing calendar, and is organised by the Italian Yacht Club.

Up until Sunday 11th, the 55+ foot categories of IMS, ORC Club Wally yachts and the Swan 45 one designs will be taking part in this year's Trofeo Ermenegildo Zegna. In total there will be approximately 30 yachts from the Italian boat owning and racing aristocracy, as well as a small but important foreign contingent, such as Alfa Romeo, Neville Crichton’s 27-metre yacht that won the last Sydney-Hobart and John Kahlbetzer’s Bumblebee 5.

But the best of the Italian maxi-yachts will be putting up a strong fight from the first tack. They are: Arturo Gismondi’s Edimetra, Pigi Loro Piana’s My Song, Raffaele Raiola’s Idea-SAI (boat of the year in 2002) with the duo Tommaso Chieffi and Lorenzo Bressani at the helm, Nico Cilenti’s Magic Jena, which is making its debut in the Tyrrhenian sea.

Among the smallest IMS boats, people can’t wait to see the 821, Marco Profili and Valerio Biondi’s 18-metre open yacht.

From the Wally category there is Wallino, the new 60-foot yacht that the owner of Wally Yachts, Luca Bassani, will be skippering personally. The flagship of the fleet will be Marco Tronchetti Provera’s 32-metre Kauris III, which performed well in the Regattas at Santa Margherita Ligure, but Magic Carpet belonging to Owen Jones from the U.K. is the one that has what it takes to win.

In the Swan 45 category there are six participants, with businessman and owner of the Nautor shipyard Leonardo Ferragamo’s Cuor di Leone firm favourite.
