Denmark's Crown Prince Frederik leads the Setanta Dragon European Championship at Kinsale Yacht Club, Ireland this evening after the opening race of the six race series.
After a mid-fleet start, the left-hand side of the course was favoured in the moderate westerly breeze and Prince Frederik sailing with Lars Hendriksen and Kasper Harsberg led from the windward mark.
Two laps of the windward/leeward course followed and the chasing pack was led by Germany's Marcus Brennecke with Markus Wiesser and Thomas Auracher ahead of Switzerland's Vincent Hoesch with Horro Kniffka and Bernd Faber.
A surprise absence from the leader pack was Denmark's Poul Richard Hoj-Jensen who placed tenth at the finish. The four-times past European champion will now be counting on the event discard for his passport back into contention.
Of the Irish fleet, former national champion Andrew Craig with Edward Peel and Aidan O'Connell took fifth overall in a trio of home-side finishers. Garry Treacy with Paul Maguire and Aiden Tarbertt was sixth and Douarnenez winner Johnny Ross-Murphy with Ailbe Millerick and Con Murphy was seventh.
Racing continues tomorrow (Tuesday) with a single race per day and the final set for Saturday afternoon.
