Big Boys Toys

Takes two bullets at RSYC's winter series

Tuesday November 11th 2003, Author: Michael Short, Location: United Kingdom
Following the postponement of Race 4 due to gales on 2nd November, races four and five of the RSYC's Winter Series were run on Sunday 9th November. This time, the wind was a steady ten knots providing ideal racing conditions marred only by a continuous drizzle of rain. The Committee boat was set near Netley buoy and the south easterly breeze allowed the courses to use the full length of Southampton Water.

The start line for race 4 had some port bias which was expertly exploited by Andrew Percival's Corby 33 Big Boys Toys II who started on port tack to cross the remainder of the class 1 IRC fleet. However the superior speed of Ed Broadway's Max Fun 35 Hooligan V soon told and she went on to take line honours in class 1, but victory on handicap went to Big Boys Toys, with Mike Garvey's X332 X Parrot in second place and Tim Octon's Corby 35 NJOS third.

In Class 2 IRC the first to finish was Liz and Chris Savage's J-80 Just Savage, but the winner on handicap was Steve Sault's Sigma 33 Hooligan with Just Savage second and Ian Barry/Robert Clarke's Evolution 22 Glass Onion third. In Class 3 Club Handicap line honours and victory on handicap went to Andrew Campbell's Bavaria 44 Faze 3 with Simon Potter's First 211 Loki second and Ginny Bennett's Dehler 36cws Ellie third. In the multihull class John Fildes' Firebird Firebird II took line honours but victory on handicap went to James Stewart's Dragonfly 920 Ngalawa with Firebird II second and
George Burn's Farrier F27 Smokey Bear in third place.

Race 5 class 1 saw identical results to race 4 with Hooligan V taking line honours but handicap victory to Big Boys Toys followed by X Parrot and NJOS. In class 2 Just Savage was again first to finish but first place on handicap went again to Hooligan with Just Savage second and Michael Livingstone/Paul Lewis' J-80 Jokers Wild in third place. In class 3, Faze 3 once more took line honours but this time she was beaten into third place by the winner on handicap Richard Walker's Micro Gem Urchin II with Loki in second place. In the multiulls, Firebird II was again the first to finish but the winner on
handicap was Ngalawa with Smokey Bear second and Firebird II third.
