Gearing up for the Mumm 30 French Nationals

Race build up in Le Havre

Friday morning and the temperature rose as the last few Mumm 30 crews to arrive here in Le Havre completed their documentation and boat checks.

Charts were studied and marked-up and waypoints loaded into the GPS. Down on the pontoons, wind vanes were refitted, rigging tightened and halyards freed, after the masts were stepped, minor repairs were carried-out and kit stowed.

There was feverish activity, too, in the boatshed, where 62 sails had been measured come lunchtime. In the clubhouse, the final few crews weighed in - hoping not to exceed the overall 525 kilos set by the Association, under threat of loosing one of the crew. Sighs of relief, or despair, therefore, as the scales gave their verdict.

A southerly Force 2 has replaced the SW Force 4 forecast for this morning and SSW Force 5 to 6 for this afternoon, and all eyes were turned to the sky, as the boat’s tacticians pored over their current and tide tables.

Pogo Bogo of Martin Moody was the first boat out at 10.00, to ‘test the water’, returning with stories of ‘light air’ and ‘amazing wind shifts’. Others followed, complete with an alfresco lunch of fresh baguette, cheese and pate, to retune their boats after their road or sea voyage here and to prepare for the training race set for 15.00.

Briefing tonight at 18.00 for the start of the event tomorrow. The Race Committee takes to the water at 11.00 for the first race.
