Melges 32 Audi Sailing Series moves on to Livorno

Thursday July 10th 2008, Author: Justin Chisholm, Location: United Kingdom
Only a few weeks after a thrilling last race finale in Cagliari, the European Melges 32 fleet are gathering at Cala de Medici Marina near Rosignano Solvay (Livorno) for round three of the 2008 Melges 32 Audi Sailing Series.

12 boats are expected to compete in what promises to be another compelling Melges 32 regatta. There is a steady flow of new owners joining the Melges 32 European class and at this event the fleet will welcome new arrival Mauro Mocchegiani, who will be launching his new boat Diletta in Rosignano Solvay. Mauro is likely to be competitive from the off having assembled a great team to support him including J/24 and Melges 24 ace Andrea Casale as tactician.

So far there have been different winners at each of the two previous events. Luigi Melegari and his tactician Matteo Ivaldi on Matrix took first blood in Malcesine and then Claudio Recchi at the helm of Lorenzo Santini’s Uka Uka Racing claimed victory in Cagliari. In the overall series standings Matrix holds a 9.6 point lead over Uka Uka Racing who are just 0.4 points ahead of Massimo and Stefano Leporati’s Kismet. Chasing hard for a series podium place are Savino Formentini’s Bitipi and Michael Illbruck’s Pinta who both have the potential to win a regatta.

Crew registration and weighing takes place at Cala de Medici Marina on Thursday 10th July with racing starting on Friday and running through to Sunday. Eight races are scheduled.
