After a string of strong finishes and consistent performance throughout the series, Daniel Calero’s
Islas Canarias Puerto Calero (ESP) has won the 2009 GP42 Owner-Driver Championship. The event featured 10 races in 4 days of competition organized by the Clube Naval de Cascais. Runner-up in the event was Jose Maria van der Ploeg’s
Turismo Madrid (ESP), a fellow competitor in the ongoing GP42 Series of the Audi MedCup.
Today Calero and his Canarias team won the first race, then the second, in Cascais’ beautiful moderate sailing breezes which were near-perfect all week, varying from a low of 8 knots to a peak of over 22 knots.
The next GP42 Class event will be in Stage 5 of the Audi MedCup, held over 16-19 September in Cartagena, Spain. The Puerto Calero team has a narrow tie-break lead in the overall standings, so the racing in the next Stage 5 will determine the overall winner in the GP42 Series. Felipe Regojo’s Quebramar Caixa Nova (POR), third overall here in Cascais, will be joining in the fleet for this last MedCup event.
Then the final event of the GP42 class for the season will be the 2009 GP42 Global Championship, to be held over 14-17 October at Puerto Calero in Lanzarote, Canary Islands.
