Carveth and Budd tied

After day one of the UK Laser SB3 Nationals in Falmouth

The first four races of the UK Laser SB3 National Championships have been completed in Falmouth with a steady set of conditions; a fresh 15-18 knots of wind from the east, big waves and bright blue skies and non-stop sunshine. A fantastic day to kick off the event.

PRO, Jeff Martin commented on the quality of the racing: “Watching from the Committee Boat was quite a spectacle. In general the fleet were extremely well behaved during races one, two and three. Unfortunately it took four attempts to get the final race of the day away as the wind dropped and shifted twenty degrees to the left. The final downwind leg of race four became tactically challenging with competitors experiencing snakes and ladders results.”



Mike Budd, the only UK sailor who claims a National Championship title in four different decades, leads at the end of day one with ten points. Geoff Carveth, also on ten points lies second. There is a wide gap in the points from second and third place, Craig Burlton and his crew on Gill Race Team lie third with 28 points at the end of day one. Jerry Hill, Guy Jackson and Andy Oddie have all started the event with strong, consistent performances and will be looking to claw back some distance between themselves and the early leaders.

Full credit must go to the entire Race Committee for achieving four races in today while 50% of the Race Committee suffered from the lumpy conditions while sat at anchor on the committee boat. The forecast is for less wind during the last two days of the event so a further four races are scheduled for Thursday.

The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club’s warm hospitality and tasty thai green curry greeted the fleet as they returned to dry land. It will be early to bed this evening in preparation for day two and another four races tomorrow.
