Burlton takes pole

After a brisk day of racing a tthe Laser SB3 Nationals in Falmouth

Day two of the SB3 National Championships dawned with similar conditions to the first day of racing. The only missing condition was unfortunately the sunshine. The wind maintained its steady easterly direction and 15-18 knot strength.

After a good night’s rest the Championships competitors left Pendennis Marina in the knowledge that there were in for another day’s tough racing. Of a possible four scheduled races today, Race Officer, Jeff Martin agreed not to start a race after three o’clock to ensure the fleet were back ashore in good time.

When studying the overall results, it appears that the upper echelon of the fleet have found their groove. Mike Budd commented that: “I’m now conscious of Geoff [Carveth] and Craig’s [Burlton] positions throughout each race. We are starting to focus on the other championship contenders, it’s really tight and really competitive racing.” The first Championship discard has now been awarded and at the end of day two Craig Burlton, with a score line of 2, 2, 4, has taken overall lead with a total of fifteen points. Coming ashore, Burlton was “too tired and hungry” to talk about his day’s success! Budd lies second with 16 points and Carveth slides to third with 21 points after discarding a black flag in race one today. Carveth is confident that he is not out of the Championship and claims there is still plenty to fight for.

Jamie Lea, Justin Chisholm and Simon Osgood racing a boat chartered from Lynx Sport Management are struggling to find form downwind. “We have had good starts and we are quick up wind, but we have plenty to work on to get the boat up to speed downhill,” commented Chisholm. Martin Jones, one of the fleet’s newest recruits came off the water beaming: “We’re getting better in our new boat...although we did suffer one black flag today!” Black flags seem to have become a collector’s item this week, Libby Greenhalgh and Mark Greenaway leading the tally with three...so far!

Colin Simonds thoroughly enjoyed today’s conditions, “cracking breeze, rocketing off waves, great courses, what more could we ask for?” Jerry Hill a.k.a. King of the Pin, put in another strong performance today with a score line of 5, 7, 1. Hill was disappointed with his seven having rounded the top mark in second place but added “All in all, it’s been a great day’s racing.”

Racing continues on Friday, it’s going to be tough at the top.
