Royal Lymington still ahead

Champagne conditions on Christchurch Bay for day two of the Royal Lymington Challenge Cup

Friday June 26th 2009, Author: Linda Dearing, Location: United Kingdom
The days racing was stalled by rain and absolutely no wind, but then it came in as predicted and Tony Blachford, Principle Race Officer for the Royal Lymington Yacht Club was able to set the course up for a 12.30 start. The sun shone and the breeze kicked in at 12 knots for the start of the two windward /leeward courses held in Christchurch Bay.

The wind was generally a south westerly building up to 15 knots. The wind shifted half way through the second race of the day requiring a 20 degrees alteration in the 2nd leg. The general consensus that this was champagne sailing once the racing got underway with very tight racing due to the small rating bands with plenty of place changes with the wind shifts and 22 boats coming in to finish within 5 mins and 12 secs of each other.

24 yachts competed in the racing compared to 23 the day before because one boat, Deja-Vu, did not survive the Round the Island Boat Race the previous week-end and the owners were able to charter Vertigo a J/109 this morning. John Barrett and Paul Woodward said they were only able to race thanks to Island Charters who came up with the boat at such short notice.

A protest was submitted between two of the Class 3 boats: Yes! skippered by Adam Gosling (Royal Yacht Squadron) against Brightwork skippered by Bob Baker (Royal Lymington Yacht Club). The case was dismissed and the Royal Lymington Yacht Club hold a one point lead over the Royal Yacht Squadron
