50 yachts expected to compete in RSYC's MDL Double Handed Regatta

Up to 50 yachts are expected to take to Solent waters for the Royal Southampton Yacht Club’s Double Handed Regatta, sponsored by MDL Marinas this weekend.

It is the second edition of what has become a biennial regatta for double handed racers and follows the great success of the 2006 event, and the Royal Southampton is delighted to once again have this event sponsored by MDL Marinas. The Club holds an enviable record as the pioneer of double handed yacht racing in the UK and is still the champion for these competitions on the water.

Racing is scheduled to start in the mid-Solent on Saturday morning and will provide round-the-cans style challenges with two races on Saturday and one on Sunday, for IRC, RSYC rated, and Multihull classes.

Trophies will be awarded to the first three boats in each race and to the first three boats overall.

Organisers are planning a crew party at the RSYC Clubhouse at Ocean Village on Saturday evening, with a happy hour and good food.

Kathy Smalley, captain of racing, said: “The Royal Southampton Yacht Club is delighted to be involved with short handed racing which has become more and more popular over the years. With three races over the weekend our regatta will provide challenging sailing on the water. And the sponsorship from MDL Marinas means that we will have a fantastic party on Saturday night giving our competitors from far and wide an opportunity to meet up. I can't wait!”
