King Harald favourite
Sunday August 12th 2007, Author: James Boyd, Location: Scandinavia
The IMS World Championship starts the sailing tomorrow at Hankø, Norway with 42 boats from six countries present.
The regatta will consist of a combination of inshore and short and long offshore races in two classes. With a championship in Norway the fleet naturally consists mainly of boats from northern Europe, 18 from the host country.
Most prominent of the Norwegians and a pre-race favourite is HM King Harald in his Farr 51 IMS Fram XV, a boat in which the King won the European Championship in 2005, theh year His Majesty was voted Sailor of the Year by the Norwegian Sailing Federation.
Other strong performances are expected from Jani Lehtis Finnish team on the Grand Soleil 42R Alfa Romeo and numerous Swedish and German boats. The IMX-40 represents the largest number of one designs in the fleet, followed by First 36.7 and GS 42R. Thomas Føyen, a previous windsurfing world Champion will be present with a new X-41, a boat which has made a strong impression both under IMS and IRC racing.
