A 15 knot speed limit has been imposed on the Central Solent from 2130 until midnight to coincide with the annual Friday evening fireworks night at Skandia Cowes Week. The limit has been imposed by Associated British Ports Southampton and Queen’s Harbour Master Portsmouth.
“People should take the same care and show the same consideration as they would if they were driving their car especially in RIBS and high powered craft," warns Cowes Harbour Master, Stuart McIntosh. “Skippers are responsible for the safety of their crews and basic measures, such as ensuring all passengers have life jackets or buoyancy aids, and respecting the speed restrictions, are essential and will help to ensure the well being of all those on board.".
The warning and restriction comes after three crew were seriously injured in an accident when they ran their RIB into the breakwater wall in Cowes at around 11pm last night. Reports suggest that the crew of five on board were drunk and were heading back to Hayling Island without navigation lights and without lifejackets.
