Consolidating a lead
Thursday July 12th 2007, Author: Graham Smith, Location: United Kingdom
The second day of racing in the Ecover Half Ton Classics Cup on Dublin Bay on Wednesday was sailed in lighter wind conditions than the opening day but there was a certain similarity in the race winner, with local boat
Henri-Lloyd Harmony (Tino Hyland/Nigel Biggs) again dominating proceedings to consolidate its overall lead with three more successes on both scratch and IRC.
In winds that fluctuated between 7 and 15 knots from the West and West-South-West, the Royal St.George YC entry headed a highly competitive 22-boat fleet in which only 15 minutes separated first from last in each race. Hyland, Biggs and crew had a couple of minutes to spare in each race as they tightened their grip on overall honours.
Cornish entry Per Elisa (Robbie Tregear/Paul Pullen) continued to impress, with two seconds and a third on the water to fill second spot overall and fourth on handicap while George Radley’s Miss Whiplash from Glandore showed sufficient consistency to move up to 2nd and 3rd overall on IRC and Scratch respectively.
Despite an OCS in the first race, the 2003 Cup winner, Philippe Pilate’s General Tapioca from Belgium, had two top five results to move up to 5th overall on IRC. Another Irish boat, the Houston/Angus partnership’s Misjif, scored a 2nd and 3rd to claim third overall on IRC.
Two more races are scheduled for Thursday 12th, the day when the Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta gets under way with 520 boats and 3,000 crew competing in 24 classes on 8 separate race courses.
