Queensland-based Alegria (Mooloolaba Yacht Club) has taken over as the points leader of the Audi IRC Australian Championship, following the second event of the 2007 Audi Sailing Sport Calendar, the Audi Sydney Harbour Regatta.
Alegria's team of 8 sailors have now been handed the orange Championship 'Leader Flags' which they will fly until the next qualifying event at the Audi Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race on 28 July 2007.
The Archambault A35 from France placed first in the IRC Division 2 at Skandia Geelong Week and now with the win at the Audi Sydney Harbour Regatta, the team is the only yacht with two first places.
Owner and skipper, Rod Jones, had strong praise for the MHYC's organisation and for Audi as the main sponsor of the Audi Sydney Harbour Regatta and says his team will bear the orange Championship Leader flags with pride until the next race of the series.
The Audi IRC Australian Championship is organised by Yachting Australia, and made up of four regattas, including Skandia Geelong Week (RGYC) and the Audi Sydney Harbour Regatta (MHYC).
The next events include IRC races at the host clubs of the Audi Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race (CYCA) in July, with the final race being held during Audi Race Week at Hamilton Island (HIYC) in August.
To be in the race to win the Australian Championship, teams must compete in at least three out of these four events. The major prize will be an Audi car. The winner will also be presented with the Audi IRC Australian Championship Perpetual Trophy.
