Werner takes home Gold Cup

Racing has concluded at the Dragon Gold Cup with two German teams clinching the top two places

The German team of Fritz Werner, Thomas Auracher and Markus Wieser sailing their BB Queen, finished fifth in today's final race of the Dragon Gold Cup in Douarnanez, enabling them to maintain their first place in the overall results.

The final race did not produce any changes to the top three positions in spite of Jorgen Schönherr on African Queen doing his utmost to upset this. Schönherr won today's race, but despite this result, his main rivals on the podium did not make any mistakes either, with SeaBiscuit and BB Queen finishing in fourth and fifth place in the race respectively. Therefore Schönherr was unable to score his fourth in a row Gold Cup victory, despite a gutsy performance throughout the competition. The winners on BB Queen with Fritz Werner at the helm, fully deserved their position winning everyone's admiration: Out of just five races run, they finished five times in the first ten and scored two wins.

The local lads, Louis Urvois, Gwen Chapalain and Sébastien Audigane on Ar Youleg dealt perfectly well with the weather conditions, which were particularly rough on the final day to finish the race in third place. This enabled them to climb to fifth place in the overall results, to be the first French Dragon. Yann Kersalé on his Dirastarc'h, was ahead of them yesterday, but ended up in a very good ninth position in the final rankings

Top British entry was Rumours (see picture at the bottom of this page) sailed by Len Jones, Jeremy Jordan and Claus Hoj-Jensen, who finished second in today's race to clinch fourth overall.



We should also mention the performance of Bruno Peyron and Jimmy Pahun (above), aided and abetted by Louis Urvois 'Junior', as although they are not Dragon specialists in this very special class, they did manage to keep up with the best, finishing in 22nd position in the overall rankings.
