Dave Dwyer with another Mariners Cove joins fleet in St. Malo, Brittany

Followers of this year’s Commodores Cup, will be familiar with Mariners Cove the very successful Mills 39 that was one of the top performing boats. August saw Mariners Cove, take the class 2 victory at Cowes Week. This week, Mariners owner Dave Dwyer, launched the latest Mariners Cove, a Cork 1720 in St Malo. For Dwyer and co skipper Tom Durkin, this marks a return to the 1720 fleet where they can renew old rivalries in this most competitive of classes.

The fight for top honours will be a tough battle. Anthony and Nin O’Leary who have been one of the dominating forces in Irish sailing over recent years looked fast in yesterdays practice race and lead a strong Irish contingent

Scottish supporters will be rooting for the Scott family of King Quick, who last year won both the Euros and the Nationals, the nucleus of this crew were also J80 world Champions in 2005.

The North of England are represented by 3 boats from Windermere, with multi world champion and 1720 Nationals runner up Steve Goacher leading the charge.

The reigning 1720 national champion Geoff Carveth, will be missed from this event, however his wing man from the Nationals, Shane Hughes is to be found together with Duncan Macdonald and Becci Eplett, aboard the Greenhalgh family’s G and T. Other strong UK entries include Rob Larke, Jonathan 'Boycey' Taylor and the 'league of gentleman' aboard Dark Side and Darren and Georgie Baker’s Mad Cow who have Olympian Hugh styles calling the shots.

The regatta is being run by the Société Nautique de Baie de St Malo and runs through until Friday. Nicolas Lemarchand and a team of Melges sailor’s are competing under the host club burgee.
