Only three matches held at Knickerbocker Cup after tropical storm sets in

Tropical Storm Ernesto did indeed pay a visit to the Knickerbocker Cup early Saturday morning. But winds of 20-25 knots did not deter the Race Committee from setting the marks and getting off the first flight. It was wild and wooly out on Manhasset Bay with heavy rains soaking everything in sight. Three matches were completed giving the few spectators - mostly press and photography - some very exciting entertainment with a few spectacular wipe-outs and some near misses that had people placing bets whether the team could get control of their boat.

Pierre-Antoine Morvan (FRA) beat Jesper Feldt (DEN) in the first match of the day, with Dave Perry (USA) over Martin Angsell (SWE). In the third and final match of the day, it was Torvar Mirsky (AUS) over Brian Angel (USA).

After the first flight, the Race Committee postponed the races and sent everyone to shore. But since Ernesto just wouldn’t give up, Race Committee was forced to cancel all races. While disappointed, the skippers and crew, used to being flexible because of their dependence on capricious Mother Nature, started planning their day - some to rest, other to try out some good local restaurants, and others contemplating a trip to nearby New York City.

Without the completion of the Quarter-finals, the valiant efforts of the teams who raced this morning did not count. Thus the ranking at the end of the Full Round Robin determined the teams for the Semi-finals: Adam Minoprio (NZ), Torvar Mirsky (AUS), Pierre-Antoine Morvan (FRA) and Martin Angsell (SWE).
