Awaiting the final outcome

Much movement on the leaderboard still after a day of improved conditions at Cork Week

Friday July 21st 2006, Author: Cork Week, Location: United Kingdom
After a second day of grey and shifty conditions at Cork Week, fair weather returned to Cork Week today as the 400-boat set the stage for today's finale to the series. Few classes have certain winners going into tomorrow's single race final day though with several noteworthy exceptions.

Class Super Zero has been led from the start of the week by Benny Kelly's TP52 Panthera and two wins on the penultimate day leaves the British visitor with the option to remain ashore this morning.

Colm Barrington's Magic Glove has a similar grip over Class Zero though a chink appeared in the week of first places when Tim Costello's second placed Tiamat scored a win yesterday to retain second overall.

Several other key classes have leaders separated by just a few points while three others have tied leaders. Among the J/109s, Andrew Allen and Colm Monahans' No Naked Flames is tied with Fiona and Malcolm Thorpe's King Louie in this 20 boat class.

Possibly the most interesting final race of the series will be on the SB3 course where Ian Southworth regained the overall lead but remained tied with previous leader Christina Summerhayes and her all-female crew on Team McLaren. With just ten boats in that class, the tied leaders are free to match-race the final as both are 15-points clear of the third placed contender.

Elsewhere among the sportsboat classes, Peter O'Leary produced the second hat-trick of wins in the 1720 class to take the overall lead with the final race to spare. Earlier in the week, Colin Galavan scored three wins in a single day.

After a week of mixed weather that ranged from flat calms to 'champagne sailing', forecasts have optimistically suggested that Cork Week 2006 will end on a high with moderate on shore winds and bright sunshine in store for the 5000 competing crew.
