Class start for J/109s at Skandia Cowes Week

Friday March 3rd 2006, Author: Becci Eplett, Location: United Kingdom
At a meeting last week, Cowes Combined Clubs agreed that there will be a Class start for the J/109s at Skandia Cowes Week in August this year. Between 20 and 25 J/109s are expected at the event and the racing will be one-design, boat-on-boat, in accordance with the strict J/109 Class Rules.

There are now 57 J/109s sold in the UK and the Class start at Cowes bears witness to the astonishing assent of the Class since the model was launched four years ago. The 35 foot J/109 has already proved itself a winner under IRC and the continued development of the one-design race circuit has been driven in part by the team at J-UK but primarily by the J/109 owners and the J/109 UK Class Association.

The other J Boats competing at Cowes week this year, the J/90, J/92, J/92 S, J/105, J/110 and the J/120 will race in the J-Sprit Class, enjoying courses that CCC specifically set.

However, the 41 foot J/125 and the 43 foot J/133s will line up against other similarly sized boats in the IRC classes, and the J/80s will race once again in the mixed Sportsboat Class. In 2005 the top three slots in the Sportsboat Class at Cowes were filled by J/80s.
