New Italian regatta

Yacht Club Costa Smerelda's Rolex Capri Sailing Week to take place next week

Filling the slot on the Mediterranean racing calendar previously occupied by the Rolex IMS Offshore World Championships, the first edition of the Rolex Capri Sailing Week will take place on 16-21 May in the Gulf of Naples.

Organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) in collaboration with the Yacht Club Capri and sponsored by Rolex, the regatta will consist of one-design racing for the Farr 40 and Swan 45 classes, and handicap racing for IMS racing boats with performance handicap ratings between 560 and 610. For the highly competitive Farr 40 class, Rolex Capri Sailing Week will be the kick-off event for the 2005 Deutsche Bank Farr 40 Sailing Trophy, a class competition based on scores from four regattas. Countries participating in Rolex Capri Sailing Week include Australia, France, Germany, Greece and Italy.

36 entries have registered for the event to date, including many of the world’s top Farr 40 and Swan 45 competitors. The Farr 40 preliminary entries include 2004 Deutsche Bank Farr 40 Sailing Trophy winner Massimo Mezzaroma of Italy at the helm of Nerone, TWT owner Marco Rodolfi, also of Italy, fresh from his third-place finish in the Rolex Farr 40 Worlds in March, and Australian businessman and avid Farr 40 campaigner, Lang Walker sailing his boat Kokomo.

In the Swan 45 class, battles can be expected between Italians Leonardo Ferragamo, who drove his boat Cuordileone to a first-place finish in the Primo Cup last February, and Vertigo co-owners Marco Salvi and Alberto Signorini, who won the 2004 Rolex Swan Cup title ahead of Ferragamo by three hard-fought points last September.

“Rolex Capri Sailing Week is poised to become a fixture on the Mediterranean racing calendar,” noted YCCS Commodore Gianfranco Alberini. “For the past several years, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the Yacht Club Capri and Rolex held the IMS World Offshore Championships in the Gulf of Naples this time of year. With that regatta moving to Mahon, Spain, in July, we saw the opportunity to create a new, top-tier racing event that would give teams a chance to go head-to-head early in the season. We expect that many of the battles on the race course during Capri Sailing Week will continue to play out as the same boats compete for titles throughout the summer.”
