An update from the Anglo Irish Bank Etchell Europeans in Howth

Day two of the Anglo Irish Bank Etchell European Championships saw very stong winds and big waves off Howth. After a frustrating day of light winds and big wind shifts on Saturday, the fleet were greated today by 25 knot winds, with gusts of up to 30 knots at times. This made for spectacular racing with boats reaching 15 knots downwind at times, and survival was the name of the game for all involved.

Boat of the day had to go to Croatian Nils Razmilovic with three top five results, to add to his two first places yesterday. Second to his brother Ante last week at the Irish National Championships, he looks set to reverse the results for the European Championships. Results were much better for Irish boats today with Mel Collins and crew winning race one and Dan O'Grady, last weeks Irish National Champion winning race three. This has pushed both crews into the top five overall with Nils Razmilovic leading, his brother Ante in second and Jarvis Tilly in third.

Collins is sailing with his father Kieran, and brother Killian. Members of the Royal Cork Yacht Club, and sailing now from Howth, they have been improving all summer. Their past sailing record is impresive, Kieran representing Ireland at the Athens Olympic games and Mel campaigned the 49er for the Sydney Games. Race three again saw Irish crews to the fore again with Dan O'Grady, another former Olympian, of Howth winning the third race, crewed by Gerard Beshoff and Ben O'Donoghue.

The tough conditions took their toll on the rest of the fleet though with a steady stream of boats arriving back to the Marina in Howth throughout the day with gear failure. 10 of the 36 boats failed to finish all three races, making the performances of the top boats all the more notheworthy. Crews get some well deserved rest this evening at the European Championships dinner before the final and deciding race tomorrow morning.
