Attack of the Dark Angel

In Kinsale, Ireland, Michelle Dunne reports from day two of the Sovereign's Cup Regatta

Dark Angel owned by Simon Coveney and Paul Hyde and helmed by Olympian Mark Mansfield winged past Colm Barrington’s Flying Glove in Division 0 to become main challenger to Eamon Conneely’s Patches on Day 2 of the Sovereign’s Cup Regatta incorporating the Irish Cruiser Racing Association Championships in Kinsale.

Patches won race 3, with Dark Angel in second place ahead of Flying Glove. The afternoon race was won by Dark Angel, putting them on equal points with Flying Glove which finished fourth. Patches finished second, giving them a series points total of 6, a four point overall lead at the end of Race 4.

Anthony O’Leary’s Antix and Eamon Crosbie’s Voodoo Chile both had a first and a third, pulling them slightly ahead of the Division 1 fleet at the end of Day 2 on 6 and 8 points respectively. Neil White’s Barafundle of Mumbles is in the lead in Echo.

Division 2 IRC sees Barry Cunningham’s Dick Dastardly in the lead, with Ian Byrne’s Sunburn second. Sunburn leads in Echo.

Fred Fisher leads Division 3 in both IRC and Echo in ‘Inca’.

The White Sail 1 fleet is lead by Sean O’Riordan’s and John Murphy’s X-Dream, while Niall O’Reilly’s Petrel is in the lead but on equal points with James O’Brien’s Zyst.

Conditions were again good for the second day’s racing, with 8 knots. S/SW for Divisions 0 and 1 on Round The Cans and lighter SW towards the Sovereign’s for Divisions 2 and 3 on the windward-leeward course. The light conditions have helped keep protests to a minimum, with only seven lodged from the entire 150 boat fleet after two days of racing.
