Best breeze at Classics
Friday April 22nd 2005, Author: James Boyd, Location: Caribbean
The 2005 Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta has drawn to a close after some of the best racing conditions the Classic Regatta has ever experienced. The winds were on the light side but it gave all of the yachts the opportunity to fly their largest and best sails resulting in a beautiful spectacle of sail.
The overall winner this year for the MT Gay Trophy was the well sailed 65 ft Nat Bengiman schooner Juno, who also won the Nicholson Caribbean Yacht Sales Trophy for first place in Schooner Class. Sumurun the beautiful Fife ketch won the Wayfarer Trophy for first overall in the Classic and Vintage classes well as the Stormy Weather Trophy, the Archibald Ried Trophy and the Yachting World Trophy for the Best Elapsed Time. Sumurun also was the overall winner of the Boat International Concourse d’Elegance.
Ashanti IV won the Antigua Slipway Trophy, the Beken of Cowes Trophy, for Best Elapsed Time, and the Tropical Studios Trophy for the most photogenic yacht. Ashanti returned to the event after many years and was one of the founding boats in 1988.
Velsheda was the star of the Spirit of Tradition Class and also winner of the J Class race held on Tuesday. She won the Ticonderoga Trophy for 1st overall , the Sintra Trophy for the Best elapsed Time.
Everyone was a winner this year as the quality and standard of the yachts was excellent, as well as the spirit on the boats and on the docks. Music filled the air, and some crews dressed in period costume. At the Cream Teas and gig racing at the Admirals Inn it was easy to slip back in time with the lovely ambiance.
All in all we can honestly say that is was the Best Classic Regatta yet.
See you next Year
