Idea SAI shows winning ways

After day two of the Zegna Trophy in Porto Fino

Sunday May 16th 2004, Author: James Boyd, Location: Italy
The high pressure stabilised over Italy has given another sunny day with moderate breeze to the Ermenegildo Zegna Trophy - Spring Regatta. The race committee postponed the start to 1.30 pm and chose to run one race only, instead of the two scheduled for the day, because of the variable conditions.

Meanwhile the crews of the 42 yachts, competing in the Zegna Trophy busied themselves with tactics and strategy.

As per tradition, the Zegna family - Anna, Paolo, Benedetta and Gildo - welcomed the numerous international guests and journalists in Portofino. Among the VIPs, gathered in La Piazzetta, there were Jean Todt, the General Director of Ferrari, Marco Tronchetti Provera, Guido Venturini, General Director of the Touring Club Italiano, Paolo Vitelli, Italian President of the UCINA and designers Philippe Starck, Germán Frers and Andrea Pininfarina.

After the long delay it was Raffaele Raiola's maxi Idea SAI that got off to the best start. Charles Dunstone's Nokia got caught too far from the line and couldn't get back in the light conditions with only two minutes of motoring permitted after the AP flag was lowered. As a result they were shut out and started second last.

At the first mark Idea SAI led from Neville Creighton's Alfa Romeo, Dragon and My Dream (the former Alexia) while by the second mark the 'winged' Mediterranean Open 60 Shining had pulled up to fourth but was eventually overhauled by Loro Piana's My Song.

Among the Wallys Klaus-Peter Offen's Y3K maintained their lead, followed by Annica and Kauris III. Vittorio Codecasa's Jeroboam remained in first place in the Swan 45 Class, followed by Papastilla-Thuraya and Mascalzone Latino. However a change of leadership did occur following today's race in the Farr 40 Class, where Joe Fly takes over from Rrose.

The Ermenegildo Zegna Trophy Spring Regattas continues on Sunday 16th. The Race Committee will decide tomorrow between one or two flights, according to the wind. The Price Giving Ceremony will be held at the Yacht Club Italiano.
