Norwegian skipper claims fifth victory in Nokia Oops Cup

The Gothenburg City Race turned into the closest competition so far in the Nokia Oops Cup. In the last race, Nokia, Gore-Tex and Academy passed under the bridge spanning the entrance to the Gothenburg harbour side by side. Skipper Magnus Olsson and crew on Gore-Tex used their vast experience to execute some fast manoeuvres, seeing the trimaran first over the finish line.

Despite the victory, Knut Frostad and Team Academy won the Gothenburg City Race regatta, after winning the first race where Gore-Tex came third. This leaves Frostad undefeated after five legs of the Nokia Oops Cup.

“But I can feel the others are neck and neck with us. We must do our very best to win the Sjaelland Rundt race this weekend,” Frostad says.

Gothenburg provided excellent sailing conditions, with the sun shining in a clear sky, and around 24 knots of wind. But the breeze was not the only challenge for the teams. Apart from covering each other, they had to evade the ships, ferries and cruising yachts creating heavy traffic on the Gothenburg harbour. And Knut Frostad proved the master yet again, even though Magnus Olsson came out on top in one race.

“But we have gained an upper hand, and will keep chasing Academy till the end,” Olsson says.

The next two events for the trimarans in the Nokia Oops Cup are the Sjaelland Rundt, Denmark’s major offshore race, starting on Friday, and the Copenhagen City Race on Monday.
